In this guide, you'll discover how to connect and manage your data sources, as well as ensure your assets stay current with their original BI or SQL sources. Whether you're syncing automatically or manually, this article provides simple steps to keep everything in sync.

In this article, we are going to cover the following topics:

Connecting and Managing Data Sources

Connecting and Managing Data Sources

Easily connect and manage your data sources using the "Manage Sources" tab. You can access this tab either through the left sidebar or by using the quick action button on the Dashboard.

Syncing Your BI and SQL Assets with Their Source

Rupert ensures your assets always stay up-to-date with their original source.

  • For BI assets: If changes are made in the sourceā€”such as renaming a view in Tableau or a Look in Lookerā€”Rupert will automatically reflect these updates in Rupert Desk. You can check the "Last Indexed" timestamp next to each asset name, which shows the last time Rupert synced with the source.

  • For SQL sources: Rupert will automatically bring in new assets, like tables and queries, whenever they are added.

Syncing Methods

There are two ways to sync your assets:

  1. Automatic Sync ā€“ Rupert performs hourly automatic syncs to keep everything up to date.

  2. Manual Sync ā€“ You can trigger a sync manually, either for specific assets or for all assets from the source.

Sync a Specific Asset (BI)

To manually sync a single asset:

  1. Go to the "Assets" tab.

  2. Hover over the asset you want to refresh.

  3. Click the refresh icon on the right.

Sync All Assets

To refresh all assets and bring in any new ones from your data source:

  1. In the filter pane, locate the source.

  2. Click the refresh button next to it.

Important Notes:

  • No sync confirmation: When syncing, the system does not display a confirmation message after the sync is complete.

  • Manual sync for new assets: If you've added a new asset (e.g., a new report in your BI tool or a new table in your database), we recommend manually refreshing the source connection immediately, instead of waiting for the hourly automatic sync.

Now your sources are connected, let's start working with assets:
